At Fergie's shop you can have custom 2,3, or 4" louvers
added to your special project. From industrial
cooling applications to flashy louvers on a car.
Besides looking good on hot rods,
louvers have ventilation benefits as well.
A 3" louver is 3/4" wide with an opening of 1/4"
they are normally
spaced 1/2" apart
which works out to be 9 louvers per foot.
Rows of louvers
are usually 5 or 6 inches apart
depending on the job and customer preference.
Any inner bracing in a hood or deck lid must be removed,
this usually involves cutting and re-welding.
If you are not comfortable doing this yourself I can do it for you.
Prior to punching the louvers the metal must be bare on both sides,
this way
there are no surprises such as old body work or bondo.
A light coat of primer
is OK but even a couple coats of paint can
cause a jagged edge on the leading edge of the louver require filing
and the paint will crack and is a bear to sand .
As far as the layout goes I like to keep fairly basic lines
with the rows
parallel to something either the center of the hood
or the edge this is of
course up to the customer
but remember louvers don't erase very well.
I have some louvered metal strips that I lay out on the hood for example,
so the customer
has an idea what the final job will look like.
For automotive work I charge $1.50 per louver which includes the layout.
Paint
stripping, cutting, and welding will be extra depending on the job.
